Philosophy As a center for academic life in northern Kanto, Ibaraki University seeks an effective integration of generalization and specialization in education and research. The University contributes to the continuing development of society through the cultivation of human resources and academic research based on an innovative viewpoint and a global perspective. Objectives Ibaraki University provides a diverse environment affording learning opportunities that prepare students for successful careers amid the challenges of the 21st Century. The University offers a variety of courses both in general education and specialized studies, including interdisciplinary areas, in order to meet the demands of ongoing changes due to globalization and advances in information technologies. Ibaraki University continues to pursue research that increases human knowledge and intellectual resources and disseminates the results worldwide. The University trains learned professionals in specialized fields of Engineering, Humanities, Education, Science, and Agriculture. Recognizing the historical, cultural, and industrial characteristics of the area, Ibaraki University contributes to the local community by providing a Life-long Education Program and cooperating with regional industries. Ibaraki University was established on May 31, 1949, as the enforcement of the 1949 School Education Law (Number 150). By integrating prewar institutions: Mito High School (Mito Koto-Gakko), Ibaraki Normal School (Ibaraki Shihan-Gakko), Ibaraki Juvenile Normal School (Ibaraki Seinen Shihan-Gakko), and Taga Technical Specialists' College (Taga Kogyo Senmon-Gakko), it instigated the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Education, and the College of Engineering. Chronology of the university is as follows.
