The University of Milan is a public teaching and research university, which - with 9 faculties, 58 departments, 48 institutes and a teaching staff of 2,500 professors - is distinguished by its wide variety of disciplinary fields.
A leading institute in Italy and Europe for scientific productivity, the University of Milan is the largest university in the region, with approximately 65,000 enrolled students; it is also an important resource for the socio-economic context of which it is a part.
Milan is, in fact, the capital of Lombardy, one of the most dynamic and international regions in the European Union, a leader in the national economy that stands at the Italian forefront of research and development investments and commitment to technological innovation.
The University has numerous centres, located in prestigious historic buildings and modern edifices. The University’s headquarters can be found in the old Ospedale dei Poveri (Hospital for the Poor) known as "la Ca' Granda" (the Big House), a 15th-century monumental complex situated in the heart of the historic city centre.
The University offers a multidisciplinary educational programme, which focuses primarily on four areas:
1. The legal, political, social and economic area
2. Healthcare
3. Science and scientific technology
4. Humanities
In recent years, the range of courses has been expanded and diversified with the establishment of new study programmes, designed to meet the specific requirements of new social-economic contexts.
In fact, it is the results of our research, attested to by an important quantity of scientific publications (more than 24,000 in the last three years alone), that have allowed us to obtain the top positions in the most authoritative international rankings:
-1st place in Italy, 7th in Europe (The Leiden Ranking – Universiteit Leiden)
-1st place in Italy, between 35th and 56th in Europe, between 101st and 150th in the world (Academic Ranking of World Universities - Shanghai Jiao Tong University)
-1st place in Italy, 16th in Europe, 74th in the world (Council of Taiwan).
